It would be preferable if students for this course had some knowledge of plaster mould making and slip casting as making moulds from sculpted clay models is quite a demanding process and requires above all patience & concentration .
It is a project based skills course in which students bring their own solid clay sculpted figures which include the expected casting shrinkage (up to 13% larger). With many models it is expected to have to make some arms and legs in moulds separately, so damp clay would be preferable to fired, as they can be easily removed from the body of the sculpture (attached some pictures of previous moulds which show this.)
The aim of the course is to enable the student to make moulds from their own work which work in the most efficient way during casting & can be repeated by being Cased in rubber.
